PB3 Reflection & Video work

‘LOOP’ is a kind of relaxed personal mobile video work. I used the TIME-LAPSE mobile camera mode to shoot all of my footages except the beginning of this video and the credits. Most of my footages have a similar frame. I made self-shootings, but I seldom show my face. Most of the time, the frame just show my half shoulder and face. Sometimes, it only shows my shadow. I decided to use this kind of mode and frame to make this video is because I wanted to demonstrate the portaflexibility of the mobile phone camera.
In this short video, I used my owe audio track. I tried to make a free and personal mobile digital work to record my daily life, which means this video is not for please publics, it is like a gift for myself.
‘How can we use video sketching with a mobile phone to demonstrate the portaflexibility of that device?’ is our group’s research question. I think my video, ‘LOOP’, which can present the portaflexibility of the mobile phone camera. It can provide some of the different shooting modes. It is easy to hold it. I can use it to do self-shooting. I could use it shoot anytime, anywhere. It is simple to use. In a word, it is very convenient for users. In addition, with the development of the technology, the quality of the mobile phone camera could become better and better. In some degree, it as some of the professional cameras.
As I said before, I wanted to make a video for myself. So from the first assessment in this subject, I have had a clear plan for this final video work. Therefore, I combined all of my footages and edited it according to the time sequence. ‘LOOP’ is consist of two parts. These two parts have the same contents but different visual effects. The colour of the first part is close to the real world, the colour of the another part is like a fantastic world. A footage of dancing in the middle is the turning  point of this video. I think life is like a dream. Sometimes, I think it is difficult to me to identify reality and fantasy. The reason why I made this video is because I want to tell myself that cherish the moments now is the most important things for me. The past is past, future is unknown, the only thing I can master is present.

Mini Documentary

Mini Documentary

At the first time, we interviewed four people in the street which is nearby the State Library. We didn’t find other places which may have better backgrounds because of the time. We all agreed that it will be easier to find interviewees if we set camera in a busy street. In that day, I was operate the camera. The sunshine was too strong. I can not make sure whether I focalized camera successfully because I just look the display screen. Those mistakes lead to some problems for our footages, like overexposure and out of focus. The framing was good. I always confident of photography composition. However, we could not use those footages.

At the second time, we did a good shooting. The process for this shooting was very good. It was efficient. We found three interviewees, and avoided all the potential mistakes. I assist Alex adjust the framing, focus and aperture. He was a little bit can not help moving the camera but I preferred a still framing for our shoot. He took my advice and was try to control his hands. So, we got great footages but next time I think I should spent more time to find a better places without some noises.

This time, I want to make an integrated documentary and maybe it should have some creative ideas inside. I want audience can feel this is a well-organized documentary. I will try my best even though the footages are limited. I don’t want to follow any traditional mode of documentary. I want to edit it from my subjective experience so that I can find my shortages when I use my work and compared it with others. I can make progress next time. So, my basic plan is using subtitles, interviews, vox pops and abstract footages, but how to organize it? I do not know. If I have some new ideas, I will put it in the editing. So, the final construction of my documentary will be presented in my final cut.

In addition, I can find the footage I need easily, I also add the layering of vision and audio to my work. I cut slowly and spent time to ponder because I want to make a good documentary whereas make perfunctory.

The Expertise (three shot) edit

In this Expertise edit, I think I feel generally satisfied with my process.

When I am thinking about the quality and usability of my recording. According to the teamwork, that represent  we got simple but correct shots. Both of the quality and usability were good.

When I am thinking about the effect of layering and juxtaposition of both the audio and the video, I used a music instead of the initial sounds. I think it was enough for my three shot film because the initial sounds were so noisy and meaningless for my expressing. So, I do not think I should put a music and the initial sounds together in this time. However, for next time, if I think I should juxtapose musics and original voices together, I will do it. In this exercise, I choose a music which sounds very deeply and strongly. The music and the three shots were matched.

I think this is a small practice but it also useful for enhancing our shot skills. I understand how to present continuous movements by sequencing connectable motion in the film editing. Even though our group just create simple shots, which in plain sight and the subjects were our group members, but I think we did a good practice.

The abstract edit

This is a reflection of my abstract exercise.

During this period of practices, I’ve learnt a lot. I think I have already recognized some knowledge and mastered some skills from this task but I also realized that I can develop my shooting and editing in many aspects.

Firstly, when I am talking about the quality and usability of my recording,  I feel satisfied for the most part. I think it is generally good because I still remember in that day, the weather was rainy and we just had few time to do it. honestly,  it was my first time to do some professional shooting, which means both of my abilities and external conditions were limited. therefore I try to find some interesting scenes and made it become unusual shots. However, my shots were not enough for me. I’ve  had to put few shots which made by my group members. Therefore,  when I doing editing, I was trying to mix them up together but I need to ensure their continuity even though it was an abstract edit. So, when I cut those shots, I was careful. What is more, I felt happy because I found that we can use most of the shots, which made by our group, because of the good quality and usability.

Secondly, when I am talking about the effect of layering and juxtaposition of my edit, I feel satisfied with my exercise. In the past, even though I knew editor can use music to cover the voices which from the initial shots but I didn’t try it until now, I just have an opportunity to do this practice. So, when I used music to cover the voices or I combined the music and voices together, I felt so excited. I found that different music can bring different feelings into films. In addition, I think most of time in the shots, the original voices can be deleted in the editing because of their meaningless. What’s more, I found that sometimes, the initial sounds are necessary because they can express something very important. Therefore, I think how to layering and juxtaposition of both the audio and video in our editing is depend on our purposes, like which kind of emotions we want to express or what’s the meaning for this shot. So, When I am considering my abstract exercise, in some scenery shots or abstract shots, I put the music into my shots and delete the original sounds is because I want audiences can enjoy the music and graphics and develop their imaginations. In the last several shots, I put the music and sounds together is because I want to present the whole environments and make compares with the preceding shots, which include gentle emotions and strong emotions.

Lastly, I think I learnt a lot from working with this kind of audio and video, I learnt how to edit the audio and video. The most important thing is I learnt how to do some choices of layering and juxtapositions of both the audio and the video. I found that making audio-visual harmonious is a basic and making it creativity is a challenge.
