Task 6: personal choice

Stream-of-consciousness theory

Calev (1978) claims that the stream of consciousness in film is the cinematic representation of mental processes of characters, turned into the structure of a movie, which in “The stream of consciousness in the films of Alain Resnais”.

Stream of Consciousness is a short film by Steven Lifshey

I like this film is because it is a very fine piece of purely visual storytelling. The juxtaposition of fantasy and reality sequences work really well and I especially like the transitions. In addition, an audience comments that it has such irony, which like you’re in some maddening circle of time that almost makes it feel like life is caught up in a whirlwind of routine, and then it hits you. You have this sudden moment of inner silence where you realize that you are a being that exists. That you are aware. And everything else after that is meaningless repetition.

As Calev mentioned, stream of consciousness comes from an awareness of drama that happens within the individual’s feelings. In some films, directors will present this kind feeling directly, which not through its result in external way. They will strive to express the co-existence of past, present and future in the character’s mind as well as the show in every moment of experience.

All the above, which inspire me to consider and design each shoot more careful and significant for my future digital storytelling.

Task 3: investigate digital tools

Chengguang word Games Software

http://www.66rpg.com/redirect/doDownload

Chengguang word Games Software is provided by a Chinese RPG Website, which is the Chengguang Games Centra. Users can use this software make RPG styled word games and only be allowed play in Chengguang Games Centra. This is a tool which is easy to learn and master. Chengguang Games Centra attract many young aged chinese word games players to visit this website and even make games by using their unique software.

There are a lot of narrative games in this website. Because of the interactivity and participation of the features in this website and games making software so that I just simply make some sequences which are related to my original project, by using this tool.

This word games making tool provide many footages for download and use. There are two different choices, free and pay. If you pay, you can get more images of the animation for characters and backgrounds, and more sounds and original game interface which are created by players rather than Chengguang creation team.

Considering the interactive narrative feature for my original project – Editing Room Escape, I planned to make a film short as well as a word game. All the picture footages would shoot by myself. I planned to use this tool and produce in this website for Chinese player. However, because of the limited team member, those tasks seems too heavy to achieve.

However, this tool and platform may could be carried out in the Side Reaction Project if our team have enough time and interested in it. This also need to be discussed.

PB3 Reflection & Video work

‘LOOP’ is a kind of relaxed personal mobile video work. I used the TIME-LAPSE mobile camera mode to shoot all of my footages except the beginning of this video and the credits. Most of my footages have a similar frame. I made self-shootings, but I seldom show my face. Most of the time, the frame just show my half shoulder and face. Sometimes, it only shows my shadow. I decided to use this kind of mode and frame to make this video is because I wanted to demonstrate the portaflexibility of the mobile phone camera.
In this short video, I used my owe audio track. I tried to make a free and personal mobile digital work to record my daily life, which means this video is not for please publics, it is like a gift for myself.
‘How can we use video sketching with a mobile phone to demonstrate the portaflexibility of that device?’ is our group’s research question. I think my video, ‘LOOP’, which can present the portaflexibility of the mobile phone camera. It can provide some of the different shooting modes. It is easy to hold it. I can use it to do self-shooting. I could use it shoot anytime, anywhere. It is simple to use. In a word, it is very convenient for users. In addition, with the development of the technology, the quality of the mobile phone camera could become better and better. In some degree, it as some of the professional cameras.
As I said before, I wanted to make a video for myself. So from the first assessment in this subject, I have had a clear plan for this final video work. Therefore, I combined all of my footages and edited it according to the time sequence. ‘LOOP’ is consist of two parts. These two parts have the same contents but different visual effects. The colour of the first part is close to the real world, the colour of the another part is like a fantastic world. A footage of dancing in the middle is the turning  point of this video. I think life is like a dream. Sometimes, I think it is difficult to me to identify reality and fantasy. The reason why I made this video is because I want to tell myself that cherish the moments now is the most important things for me. The past is past, future is unknown, the only thing I can master is present.

Reflection-Sketch by GaGa

In this sketch, I found that Gaga used a special angle in this footage, with using her phone camera.
She left her phone in the rubbish bin. She threw something into this rubbish bin. The camera recorded the whole process. She got a low angle view in this sketch.
I like this sketch is because I can feel Gaga was trying to find some special ways to illustrate the “portaflexibility” of the phone camera.
I saw some similar frame designs in some films. This kind of frame often surprises me. I never thought that using our personal mobile phone camera can make some similar footages which have creative frames. However, after watching this sketch, I ask myself why not using my phone camera to find a great frame. I think my enthusiasm of digital shooting become increased.
I think for phone camera’s portability that the flexibility of it can contribute the users creative shooting.

Reflection-Sketch by Shu

This sketch has a very clear frame. It presents a good weather. Shu was sitting in a car. The car was moving, she recorded the view of the road through the window.
I found that the scene in this sketch is not shaking. I guess she pressed her mobile phone camera on the window in order to avoid it shaking. As far as I see, many cameramen are likely to use the tripod  to getting images which are not shaking for some requirements. However, the flexibility of the mobile phone camera can let people find any available resources for digital shooting.
In this case, Shu kept the stability of this image without any tripod, which presented the portaflexibility of the phone camera in the use of practices. I think it can demonstrate our research question.
