Forbidden Lies

In the beginning, I hear bird calls three times and a sound of a car engine. I think they were produced by post editing. In some transitions, the director add some special sounds also by editing. When an actress throwing a scarf into sky,  I can hear a stress which is also made by editing. When the scarf drop out, stress again. A woman walking in a desert, I can hear her footsteps and the sound of wind which made by post editing. When she vanish, I can hear a sound like wind blown sand. When the editor did some hard cuts in the clip of this film, I can hear a sound like open the book and put down the book, which are match the image. However, I don’t think they were recorded on the spot. What’s more, I can totally hear bells twice, which are in the beginning and ending. It is a good design, so cute. I like one scene very much because the director put an ethnic sound as the background music. The scene is that a woman speaking, the image present her a series of actions. The background of the ethnic sound is light and soft. However, I think there are some sounds were recorded in that time, like the sound of twitter and typing. In the middle, the director also put some special sounds into this film, like the camera clicks. When the image is showing a map, there are some sounds which include the sound of arrows and the beat of heart. These sound also produced by editing.

In the footages of the interview, I guess the editor enhance the voice of all the speakers when they did the edit. In another scene, which is a man give money to a women. The editor also put some sounds in editing. For example, a sound of kneading note, a sound of shaking coins. The next scene is two women in one bedroom, there is an edited sound which is a sound of using cigarette lighter.

In the end, a woman is using her phone of talking with a man. I can hear the man’s answers but I am not use whether it was recorded by phone or not but I guess it was not recorded in that day.

No Direction Home

In the beginning of this sequence, it present some fragments of bob’s concert. Bob is the protagonist in this documentary. Martin Scorsese also use a close up shot to present bob’s face in his youth. Next, it is an abstract scene. The images are combined with trees, fogs and snow. I am not sure why the director put this scene in here. I guess it because when bob is telling, he mentioned about some scene like it or it is related to his growing environment. And next, Mr. Scorsese put some old photos into this documentary, which include bob’s childhood house and the portrait of childhood. At the same time, there is bob’s telling in the background. Then, the image cut to his interview. And then, he still telling his story about the situation of the society, some background and his family but the image changed into some clips of the old film which related to bob’s telling. The final footage is the newspaper.

So, I guess the next plot also should be some stories in his life. This documentary is like introducing bob’s lifetime. It is a process. It should be include the things happened before his singing career and after his singing career. He may talk some big troubles he meets before and some worries he considers now. I think the audience also could know some changes of the society from his story.

I like the performative mode for some reasons.

Specific theme

After watching the Supersize me, Morgan Spurlock 2004 and the Slacker Uprising, Michael Moore 2013, I find that those kind of documentary have a common feature – specific theme. Director want to tell a story for audience. They organize the documentary carefully. The theme of the documentary usually related to some social events. I think it is different to some other modes, like the observational mode which have more complicated themes. I think these themes are more abstract. For example, like Frederick Wiseman, Hospital (1970) – fly on the wall, American hospital, after watching it, I know the main location is a hospital, but I need to guess what does the director want to say. If I don’t know the background of the story at all and if I totally don’t know English, I couldn’t understand the meaning of this documentary.

Clear structure

The reason why I like the performative mode very much also because of its clear structure. This kind of documentaries usually have clear beginning, middle and end. So the audience can understand what does the director want to express. The audience don’t have to worry about whether they know the related background or languages because of the clear structure. Directors organize the structure carefully. They usually add some images, graphs and animations into the documentary, which can make direct impressions to the audience. This kind of documentaries look like they are rich in content. I think as a beginner to make a documentary, I prefer choosing this mode to make because of the clear structure. After doing more practice, I think I can try to follow other modes. I think it will be a challenge because I think it will more complicated to organize the structure. Also, it is difficult to present the manifestation of the rhythm in other modes.

Colour Grade

I think the colour of the original image is a little orange, so I want to make the colour  become more nature and soft. So, When I was using the Three-Way Colour Corrector, I just try to move these lines. When I moved it to different direction or put it to different length, the present of the image also changed all the time. However, I still just want do some simple adjust because I do not want the image become strange and unnatural. So, in the three circled-controls, which include shadows, Midtones and Highlights, I put the lines to right just a little bit. So, the colour of the image becomes pink but more nature. I think just use the Three-Way Colour Corrector is not enough so that I also adjust the brightness and the contrast. I want the image become more vivid.

Mini Documentary

Mini Documentary

At the first time, we interviewed four people in the street which is nearby the State Library. We didn’t find other places which may have better backgrounds because of the time. We all agreed that it will be easier to find interviewees if we set camera in a busy street. In that day, I was operate the camera. The sunshine was too strong. I can not make sure whether I focalized camera successfully because I just look the display screen. Those mistakes lead to some problems for our footages, like overexposure and out of focus. The framing was good. I always confident of photography composition. However, we could not use those footages.

At the second time, we did a good shooting. The process for this shooting was very good. It was efficient. We found three interviewees, and avoided all the potential mistakes. I assist Alex adjust the framing, focus and aperture. He was a little bit can not help moving the camera but I preferred a still framing for our shoot. He took my advice and was try to control his hands. So, we got great footages but next time I think I should spent more time to find a better places without some noises.

This time, I want to make an integrated documentary and maybe it should have some creative ideas inside. I want audience can feel this is a well-organized documentary. I will try my best even though the footages are limited. I don’t want to follow any traditional mode of documentary. I want to edit it from my subjective experience so that I can find my shortages when I use my work and compared it with others. I can make progress next time. So, my basic plan is using subtitles, interviews, vox pops and abstract footages, but how to organize it? I do not know. If I have some new ideas, I will put it in the editing. So, the final construction of my documentary will be presented in my final cut.

In addition, I can find the footage I need easily, I also add the layering of vision and audio to my work. I cut slowly and spent time to ponder because I want to make a good documentary whereas make perfunctory.

Reflection on the course

As I said in the first assessment, task two, ‘Goals and Desires, I wanted to know how to record sounds and images correctly and creatively, master Premiere and develop my interest in shooting and editing. So, at the end of this semester, I think I have already achieve these goals basically. However, I think I always focus on shooting and editing, which results in my poor recording knowledge and skills. I feel a little regret but I think I will have other chances to practice it in the next days. I also will review some related materials which were given by teachers. I think an instruction of recording equipment is the one which I really need to do a good review.

At the begin of this semester, I said I want to put some music into my work, which are made by myself. However, I did not do it in my mini doco exercise. I do not feel regret at all because from this course, I gradually become interested in making film. I can make sure I will achieve this goal soon.

I feel so happy because I can enjoy the process of film editing. In addition, I got a thing which is more valuable for me. That is team work. For my previous experience, I did not get many chances to work with other people so that I thought I am a person who prefer like working alone. I changed my mind after working with my lovely classmates. Now, I definitely believe that the team work is more powerful than single work. Thank my teachers and teammates because I got unforgettable experiences in this period.
