The Expertise (three shot) edit

In this Expertise edit, I think I feel generally satisfied with my process.

When I am thinking about the quality and usability of my recording. According to the teamwork, that represent  we got simple but correct shots. Both of the quality and usability were good.

When I am thinking about the effect of layering and juxtaposition of both the audio and the video, I used a music instead of the initial sounds. I think it was enough for my three shot film because the initial sounds were so noisy and meaningless for my expressing. So, I do not think I should put a music and the initial sounds together in this time. However, for next time, if I think I should juxtapose musics and original voices together, I will do it. In this exercise, I choose a music which sounds very deeply and strongly. The music and the three shots were matched.

I think this is a small practice but it also useful for enhancing our shot skills. I understand how to present continuous movements by sequencing connectable motion in the film editing. Even though our group just create simple shots, which in plain sight and the subjects were our group members, but I think we did a good practice.

The abstract edit

This is a reflection of my abstract exercise.

During this period of practices, I’ve learnt a lot. I think I have already recognized some knowledge and mastered some skills from this task but I also realized that I can develop my shooting and editing in many aspects.

Firstly, when I am talking about the quality and usability of my recording,  I feel satisfied for the most part. I think it is generally good because I still remember in that day, the weather was rainy and we just had few time to do it. honestly,  it was my first time to do some professional shooting, which means both of my abilities and external conditions were limited. therefore I try to find some interesting scenes and made it become unusual shots. However, my shots were not enough for me. I’ve  had to put few shots which made by my group members. Therefore,  when I doing editing, I was trying to mix them up together but I need to ensure their continuity even though it was an abstract edit. So, when I cut those shots, I was careful. What is more, I felt happy because I found that we can use most of the shots, which made by our group, because of the good quality and usability.

Secondly, when I am talking about the effect of layering and juxtaposition of my edit, I feel satisfied with my exercise. In the past, even though I knew editor can use music to cover the voices which from the initial shots but I didn’t try it until now, I just have an opportunity to do this practice. So, when I used music to cover the voices or I combined the music and voices together, I felt so excited. I found that different music can bring different feelings into films. In addition, I think most of time in the shots, the original voices can be deleted in the editing because of their meaningless. What’s more, I found that sometimes, the initial sounds are necessary because they can express something very important. Therefore, I think how to layering and juxtaposition of both the audio and video in our editing is depend on our purposes, like which kind of emotions we want to express or what’s the meaning for this shot. So, When I am considering my abstract exercise, in some scenery shots or abstract shots, I put the music into my shots and delete the original sounds is because I want audiences can enjoy the music and graphics and develop their imaginations. In the last several shots, I put the music and sounds together is because I want to present the whole environments and make compares with the preceding shots, which include gentle emotions and strong emotions.

Lastly, I think I learnt a lot from working with this kind of audio and video, I learnt how to edit the audio and video. The most important thing is I learnt how to do some choices of layering and juxtapositions of both the audio and the video. I found that making audio-visual harmonious is a basic and making it creativity is a challenge.

My first googlealert

I entered three keywords yesterday evening in my “Create an alert about” box, but, I just receive one notification in my Google Mail.

‘Lose weight’ is one of my keywords. Actually, I want to receive some notifications which can teach me how to lose weight. I want to get some skills from these notifications. However, I just receive a news which is talking about an actress who lost weight. Therefore, I do not think this notification is useful for me.

So, I find that if people want to receive some notifications which are they really want, they should make their keywords become more specific when they put it in the “Create an alert about” box.

Prompt – A scene

A scene from Martin Scorseses’s 1976 film Taxi Driver is talking about the main character Travis who wants to date a beautiful girl Betsy. So, there are many shots of their chatting.

At the beginning, the director use Mid Shot to describe the main character. He is a driver, he wear a red clothes and his looks. After that, there is a Long Shot and Single shot follow him walk into to the building, which means the main place in this scene will take place indoor.

Next, during their communication, director use some Mid shot, Medium Close-up and most Two Shot to present their talking. The audience can find there are some close-ups which present the main character’s face and hands. What’s more, there are several shots are similar with the OTS when Betsy is talking to the Travis. So, in that shots, audience can see the foreground is a view of Travis’s back which is hazy. The subject is Betsy. She is clear and the camera angle is Low angle. Most of time, the camera angle is Medium angle in this scene. When the camera follow Travis’s hand slowly moving, the camera angles is High angle. However, I feel unnatural for his hand’s moving because I feel a little bit dissonance between his sound and his hands moving.

I think the editing for this scene is good because the frame is consistent. However, I find in one shot, when Betsy is talking to the Travis, he glance at the camera lens. It is a little strange.

In this scene, I think they put a very good decoration the desk. It is a small basket. I think it can make these shots more vivid. It also imply this loving story between the two characters. In addition, both of them wear red clothes. I guess it maybe hint they are match. Not only the dressing, but also their personality. The director choose red colour and maybe wants to suggest their passionate character. I think it is meaningful.

In addition, There are some shots include three important characters. When Travis and Betsy are talking, Travis is in the left, Betsy is in the right, another men in the middle of the background. So, it seems like there is a triangle in the screen. I think it could excite audience’s curiously. Then, I will guess what’s the relationship between this guy and Betsy and if he like her.

In the end, Travis walking in the outside and waiting Betsy. It is a Mid Shot with Single Shot and the camera angle is follow the main character doing left translation.

Keyboard shortcuts

As a beginner to use Adobe Premiere, I do not know why I do not want to use the keyboard shortcuts at all. Maybe it because these keyboard shortcuts are unfamiliar for me. If I could not master it, I prefer use mouse to click each function so that I won’t feel nervous when I edit my projects. However, I think mastering these keyboard shortcuts can improve my work efficiency. What’s more, I think only by practicing constantly, I can master keyboard shortcuts well. Therefore, I will show several shortcuts which is important, useful and easy to learn for me. I want to use them in my future practices.

Results Windows Mac OS
 Save Ctrl+S Cmd+S
 Select All Ctrl+A Cmd+A
 Speed/Duration Ctrl+R Cmd+R
 Mark In I I
 Mark Out O O
 Add Marker M M

To be honest, I did not use those keyboard shortcuts before. Although, some shortcuts like Mark In and Mark Out are very simple, but I think if I can master those basic but efficient shortcuts, my editing process could become more quickly.

To be more precise, using Ctrl+R or Cmd+R can change the speed. What is more, when we use I or O, we can decide which moment is the beginning or ending for this scene. It is very convenient,  I can save a lot of time.

Crew Roles

· When I read the Crew Roles before, I just know some of the key roles in film production. I know the director, I know the camera operator because I always see it in the beginning of films. So, some roles are familiar to me, but some roles are not. For example, like casting director. So, I still feel a little confused about the differences between the casting director and director. I think both of them are important to the entire film producing but I guess the casting director should follow the order by director.

· In the past, I was no idea about the art department. I did not think that the art department is very important. I thought this department maybe just make smaller contributions to productions. However, I already knew their works and responsibilities. So, these concepts for those roles have been forming in my mind.

· I did not know that the construction specialists and the special effects should answer to the art director before. I thought they maybe should answer to the director. I feel a little surprised for this information. According to the Developing a Crew, I find some abbreviations, like DP, MP and so on. It is interesting. Different individuals or groups need to answer the different individuals or groups. It seems extremely complicated but it is worth to understand the network.

· In the end, I have a question. In these materials, why it does not mention about the actors. Is it means actors are not key role in film production? However, I think actors also play important roles in film production and should answer to the director or other experts.
